1. Regional Assessment Report: Analysis of Regional Progress in DRR in Arab countries: UNDRR MENA Regional Office in Egypt
The Regional Assessment Report is an important initiative of the UNDRR- Regional Office for Arab States (ROAS) that contributes to the achievement of the Sendai Framework through monitoring risk patterns and trends and progress in disaster risk reduction in the Arab region while discussing various challenges and opportunities for development of Arab countries in DRR. The objective of developing this Regional assessment report is to give an overview on disaster risks in the region based on evidence-based analysis.
2. Development of Technical Advisory Document for Integration of Biological Hazards into DRR and development planning for UNDRR
It involved developing technical guidance for integrating biological hazards into DRR and development planning. This required reviewing existing guidelines and documents on DRR and biological hazards; developing analytical basis for identifying and mitigating risk associated with biological hazards across diverse sectors.
3. World Bank Regional Assessment of DRM Institutions in the South Asian Region in collaboration with ADPC
The regional assessment of DRM institutions is aimed to bring forth the challenges and issues which need immediate attention so as to truly mainstream DRM as a culture. The project spans across seven SAARC countries namely, Pakistan, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, India, Bangladesh and Nepal. The project entails regional stock-taking of national, sub-national and local DRM institutions.
4. Providing technical assistance to the State Government of Odisha in setting up the International Centre for Disaster Management for UN Office in India
It involved developing review paper capturing details of various centres of excellence in the field of Disaster Management and Climate Change globally. Besides, it required providing technical advisory support to the UNRCO and the State Government of Odisha through consultations and a concept note on the proposed International Centre for Disaster Management.
5. Supporting the Establishment of India University Network with UNDRR & NIDM
The initiative involves establishment of a professional network of universities and institutes which offer a course on Disaster Risk Management. It entails detailed study, mapping of university courses and strategy-building for the professional development of the nation-wide association.
6. Climate and Disaster Resilience Initiative, Ministry of Education (MEXT), Government of Japan
It involved developing implementation oriented solution for city officials to make the cities resilient to climate related disasters. The project was based in 36 cities in the Asia Pacific region and included city resilience analysis, action planning, policy dialogue, prepare an international standard disaster management planning guideline, engage in capacity building.
7. Reduce the gap between knowledge and practice in disaster risk reduction: Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies, Kyoto University and MEXT, Government of Japan
Environment and Disaster Management Research Field targets to reduce the gap between knowledge and practice through pro-active field level, community-based project implementation. The target areas are mainly developing countries in Asia (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam), which have the highest population growth, and high vulnerability, due to different types of natural and man-made disasters. The focus of this research field is to learn lessons from the field experiences through effective environment and disaster related project management.
8. Enhancing local capacities through multi-stakeholder partnerships by UNCRD
The multi-country (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mongolia, Nepal, Philippines, Tajikistan, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Vietnam) initiate is based on the applied research, training and project management activities, and focused on community capacities in the multi stakeholder environment.
9. World Bank Evaluation on impact of Social Fund in Indonesia
An evaluation study was undertaken to see the impacts of Social Fund (Kechamatan Development Program: KDP) in the affected region of Indonesia. The evaluation was done in year 2007-2008 in cooperation with the World Bank country office in Jakarta, provincial government of Aceh and KDP facilitators in the field.
10. World Bank Training to Community based housing
As a part of the World Bank funded community based housing recovery, a training program was conducted with more than 300 housing facilitators in Aceh in year 2005-2006. Project components were: selection of housing facilitators, developing training modules, undertaking training programs and finally evaluating the impacts of training. The experience was transferred to the Yogyakarta earthquake. This became core policy of community based housing recovery for Aceh program of the World Bank led multi-donor trust fund.
11. UN ISDR AIDCO Project
As a part of the AIDCO project of UNISDR, a capacity building program was conducted in four countries: India, Indonesia, Maldives and Sri Lanka in cooperation with three universities: University of Madras (for India and Maldives), Institute of Technology Bandung (for Indonesia), and University of Peradeniya (for Sri Lanka). Training programs were developed and implemented in close cooperation with local governments and local NGOs. Parts of the training programs were converted to modules to be incorporated in the higher education in the university curriculum in respective universities. This became a key recovery policy of higher education in disaster risk reduction for UN ISDR.
12. World Bank Housing Guidebook
As a team member of the World Bank Housing Guidebook development team, the key responsibility was the write a chapter on the environmental impacts of housing recovery in post disaster context. During this process, there were several consultations among different group members as well as with the Bank and other development stakeholders. The product was the Housing Recovery Guidebook.
13. IRP Recovery Guidelines
International Recovery Platform (IRP) has developed a series of guidelines for post disaster recovery issues. As an external reviewer of the guidelines, and during that process, interactions and workshops were held with different stakeholders.
14. ILO Employment Recovery Policy lessons
The ILO has been engaged in disaster risk reduction (DRR), in particular, in the areas of livelihoods recovery and employment protection. However. In order to better assist its constituents in developing employment-focused risk mitigation strategies, it is necessary for the ILO to better understand challenges faced by countries. In particular, more detailed information as to how, if at all, employment and livelihoods issues have been addressed in the disaster risk reduction cycle needs to be gathered and analyzed thoroughly. It is with this understanding that the ILO Decent Work Team in Bangkok launched a new technical cooperation project “Employment Promotion in Disaster Response” (hereafter the EPDR Project). This assessment is part of this broader ILO technical cooperation imitative of a one-year period (2015-2016). For this assessment exercise, four disaster prone countries in Asia and the Pacific, i.e., Japan, Philippines, India and Nepal have been chosen. The comparative study examines findings of assessments that have been conducted in the four case study countries, and provide a comparative analysis on impacts, challenges and opportunities of employment-focused DRR. Developed policy note based on comparative analysis of post disaster employment recovery in four countries Japan, Philippines, Nepal and India.
15. Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority Government of Sikkim, India
To develop the modalities of a new education research institution for climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction. Made initial need assessment, conducted interviews with key persons, and developed road map, and presented in front of the government senior ministers and officials.
16. Urban resilience in Asian cities
To study urban resilience of three cities in Bangladesh, Indonesia and China, and made the urban risk reduction framework. The project was funded by the World Vision International. Analyzed urban resilience in city, sub-city and community level, prepared report, and presented to the different stakeholders.
17. Comprehensive Disaster Management Program (CDMP)
UNDP with the government of Bangladesh and other partners have been conducting CDMP for several years. There has been significant knowledge accumulated in the project, which needs to turn into knowledge products. The target was to develop two books based on CDMP, and make them a part of the higher education programs in the country.
18. Post disaster education recovery
At the post Nargis disaster, UNESCO developed a project for developing education materials for school-teachers and provide training for master trainer in Myanmar in cooperation with Ministry of Education and Training of Government of Myanmar. Developed disaster education materials and provided training to the teachers.
